Tavrida Electric Sets New Smart Grid Standart In India

Tavrida Electric has helped to build a new and innovative smart grid in India and in so doing has set a new standard for power projects in the state of Odisha.

Tavrida Electric was tasked with delivering unmanned substations by the Central Electricity Supply Utility of Odisha (CESU) to avoid the high cost of constructing and operating more traditional models. Space and reliability issues were also challenges to be overcome.

The solution provided by Tavrida Electric is fully integrated and includes current sensors, voltage relays, meters and switchgear. Substation sizes were reduced significantly by using smallest-in-class switches. The substations are also fully automated (enabled through TELARM®* technology) improving the reliability of the state’s power supply substantially. This is key to supporting and developing the regional economy.

Tavrida Electric completed the project quickly. The substations are seen as the new benchmark upon which other unmanned substations in the state will be based. Since the solution does not need CESU to maintain it, the utility company can allocate more resources to implement other projects.

CESU is responsible for power transmission and distribution in nine districts of Odisha, namely Cuttack, Puri, Dhenkanal, Angul, Khurda, Kendrapara, Nayagarh, Jagatsinghpur and part of Jaipur. The region is spread over 29,000 square kilometres and is home to 10 million of the state’s population.

* TELARM® Dispatcher and Dual-SCADA
TELARM® Dispatcher is a proprietary remote control and monitoring system that works as a standalone SCADA and/or in parallel with an existing SCADA system, acting as a back-up method of controlling and monitoring reclosers. TELARM® Dispatcher offers a number of features not available with most conventional SCADA systems, such as remote access to system logs, fault and load profiles and the remote control of protection settings.
