Keeping the lights on during FIFA World Cup

The FIFA World Cup 2018™ is held from June 14 till July 15 on the football fields in 11 cities in Russia. We are not standing aside, today our agenda is focused on the stadiums newly built and renovated for the World Cup. Tavrida Electric took part in the projects of power supply of those stadiums.

Volgograd Arena

The new stadium is built on the picturesque bank of the Volga River at the foot of the Mamayev Kurgan, at the site of the dismantled Central Stadium. The building of the Volgograd Arena (capacity: 45,000) takes the form of a 49.5 m high inverted, truncated cone with a diameter of 303 m.

The power for the stadium is provided by renovated 33/11 kV substation with DP-12 series Tavrida Electric primary distribution switchgear inside. The loads on the stadium are powered and protected with Tavrida Electric Etalon- series smart compact switchgear.

4 group matches will be held in the stadium. Thereafter, the stadium will be used as a home arena for the local football team Rotor Volgograd.

Samara Arena

Samara Arena is located in the highest point of the city, near the village of Radiocenter. Its architecture is symbolic for Samara, a city that plays an important role in the world history of space exploration: the stadium’s facade represents a transparent dome that makes the arena look like an outer space object. This is a two-tier stadium with natural grass; the football field is equipped with the artificial heating and automatic irrigation systems. The main source of the power supply of the Samara Arena is a 110/10 kV Stadion Substation which uses the Tavrida Electric Vacuum Circuit Breakers.

The 1/8 and 1/4 final matches of the World Cup will be held here. After the World Cup, the stadium will become a home arena for Football Club Krylia Sovetov, Samara.

Mordovia Arena, Saransk

Mordovia Arena (capacity: 30,000) is built in a walking distance from the centre of Saransk, in the flood plain of the Insar River. The stadium has been designed in the shape of an oval, with a high two-story basement. The walls and the roof are designed in the form of a single shell of perforated metal panels painted in bright colours. According to the idea of the architects, the shape and the coloration of the arena shell would symbolize the sun, warmth, kindliness and hospitality.

New 10 kV distribution center “Stadion” was built to provide a power supply to the stadium. Distribution center switchgear includes 20 panels with maintenance free VCB15_LD series circuit breakers. In addition, arc protection of the switchgear was implemented.

Saransk will host 4 group matches of the World Football Cup 2018. After the World Cup, the stadium will become a home field for the local football club Mordovia.

Yekaterinburg Arena

Yekaterinburg Arena is the Central Stadium built in 1953-1957 and renovated for the World Cup. The facade with its Soviet neoclassical shape has been on the list of Russian architectural heritage. The historical appearance of the building was preserved in accordance with the renovation project. The architecture of the new parts of the facade is neutral — it is a sort of a background that emphasizes the historical elements. The stadium is designed with an open play area, and there is a canopy over the seats. In the evening, the architectural facade lighting will further enhance the building's appearance. As a result of the construction works, the capacity of the arena is 35,000 seats now.

To provide the stadium with electricity, new closed-type transformer substation was commissioned. Substation switchgear comprises of 12 panels with VCB15_LD series circuit breakers.

Four group matches of the World Football Cup 2018 will be held in the stadium. After the World Cup, the stadium will become a home field for Football Club Ural,
Yekaterinburg.

Kaliningrad Arena

The stadium is built on the shore of the October Island, in the immediate vicinity of the embankment of the Old Pregolya River. The stadium resembles a ship: a rectangular shape with rounded edges, a wavy facade with blue inserts. In the arena construction site, on the island in the vicinity of the river there is a complex soil profile beneath. The construction workers had to use a pile foundation with monolithic reinforced concrete grillages reinforced with the joint plate on top.

In the preparation for the World Cup, the regional power engineers built two new substations — near the stadium and near the airport, and relocated 5 high-voltage air lines. They installed a power transmission tower in the form of the Mascot Zabivaka Wolf being quite a surprise for the fans. And the city transformers were decorated with the portraits of famous football players. The transformer substations (TP 2 and TP 4) using the Novatsia KSO Cells are installed in the stadium under the stands.

Substations “Beregovaya” 110/10 kV, “Ostrov-1” 10 kV and “Ostrov-2” 10 kV are implemented with Tavrida Electric VCBs in their switchgear.

Rostov Arena, Rostov-On-Don

The new sports facility on the map of Rostov is located on the left bank of the Don River, on which a special sand cushion was washed in for its construction. The five-storey stadium complex has the shape of a rectangle with rounded corners. Four three-tier stands are crowned with a wave-like roof having a tent membrane structure, with a rectangular cutout above the football field. Substation “Sportivnaya” 110/10 kV which provides the stadium with electricity uses switchgear panels with Tavrida Electric VCBs.

Rostov Arena will host group matches of the World Cup, and one of the 1/8 final games. After the World Cup, the Rostov Arena will become a home playground for the local football club Rostov.
